Opera on the Avalon
2018 Summer Festival Season
General & Artistic Director: Cheryl Hickman
Resident Conductor: Judith Yan
Opera on the Avalon is continually evolving and working towards becoming Atlantic Canada's premiere professional opera company, with diverse offerings of stage experience for young singers, as well as seasoned professionals. Opera on the Avalon offers two tiers of training programs: the Studio Artist Program, and the Young Artist Program.
The Studio Artist Program is our pay to sing program. Studio Artists may have the opportunity to sing ensemble and solo roles in MainStage productions with orchestra, as well as with the School Tour production. Additionally there are opportunities for solo and chorus roles in various concerts and recitals. Successful Studio Artist candidates should be at least undergraduate freshman, or graduate students completing a Masters or Diploma equivalent. However, Studio Artists should not be currently enrolled in a paid Young Artist Program. An added benefit to participants in the Studio Artist program is the eligibility to claim all tuition with a receipt due to our new designation as an educational institution by Canada Revenue Agency.
The Young Artist Program is best suited to singers who are currently participating in young artist residency programs or have significant professional experience. Young Artists may have the opportunity to sing principal and supporting roles in MainStage productions, as well as in various concerts and recitals. As there is a maximum of eleven participants selected for the Young Artist Program each season, applicants who are not selected for the Young Artist Program may be selected to partake in the Studio Artist program at the discretion of the artistic staff.
Additionally, Opera on the Avalon offers a variety of internships in Collaborative Piano, Arts Administration, Conducting, Directing, Production Management, Stage Management and Technical Theatre. Housing is available to singers in both the Studio Artist and Young Artist Programs.
